Author Guidelines

Materials are submitted through the website or sent by e-mail to the executive secretary: bohomolets.barash@knu.ua

Deadlines:

  • for the current year’s issue – by April 1 this year;
  • for next year’s issue – after April 1 of the current year.

After submission, the manuscript of the article is checked for compliance with the Author guidelines; undergoes a double “blind” review, final discussion, and decision on acceptance or rejection. If there are comments or suggestions, the author should improve the article or submit to the editorial board a reasoned explanation of disagreement with the opinion of experts.

Suppose the article is accepted for publication in the journal “Ukrainian Linguistics”. In that case, the author must sign Authors Agreement and send (a scanned version or photocopy) to the journal's e-mail address (within three days).

All accepted articles (reviews) are posted on the website of the Journal (sections Current issue; Archive) before the release of the paper version of the publication (until October 1 of the current year).

Before submitting an article to the journal “Ukrainian Linguistics” editorial board, the author must read the publication's Ethical Policy to adhere to the ethical principles recommended for authors during the publication process.

The requirements for the structure and content of the article correspond to the provisions of the National Standard of Ukraine DSTU 7152:2020. Edition. Designing publications in magazines and collections and EASE (European Association of Scientific Editors) Guidelines for Authors and Translators of Scientific Articles to be Published in English.

The languages of the publication are Ukrainian and English.

Papers should be submitted in electronic form (Microsoft Word editor). Files’ names must conform to the author’s surname, for example, hnatiuk.doc.

THE REQUIREMENTS FOR WRITING AN ARTICLE

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Volume OF THE MAIN TEXT:

  • original research article – from 3,000 to 8,000 words (up to 50,000 characters);
  • review article – from 2,000 to 5,000 words.

2. The type is Times New Roman. If you use another type, you have to provide it in a separate file. The text is printed with the division of words.

3. Page parameters:

  • line spacing – single;
  • paragraph indentation – 0.5 cm;
  • format – A5;
  • fields:

             upper – 2,0;          lower – 2,2;

             left – 2,0;             right – 2,0.

 

ARTICLE’S PRE-TEXT MATERIALS

Formatting parameters of structural elements pre-text materials – 10 pt, bold.

1. The first and second lines, on the left:

– UDC index;

– Digital Publication Identifier (DOI).

2. Through the line to the right – information about the author(s):

– First name, SURNAME, academic degree, academic title;

– ORCID ID unique identifier of the research author;

– corporate e-mail of the author(s);

– the main place of work or study during the research (name of the institution or organization), city, country.

3. Through the row, in the center: TITLE OF THE ARTICLE – all capital letters.

4. Through the row: in Ukrainian (the language of the text of the article), in italicsAbstract (1,800 –2,500 characters, with spaces) and Keywords (for an original research article – 4 to 8 keywords, for a review article – 3–6 keywords).

The abstract of the original research article should be structured and informative, comply with the IMRAD structure, contain the following points: Background (actuality, objectives, tasks), Methods, Results, Conclusions.

The abstract of a review article can be unstructured; it should highlight the main theses of the review.

MAIN TEXT OF THE ARTICLE

1. An original research paper must be prepared using the IMRAD structure and contain the following basic elements:

  • Introduction.
  • Methods.
  • Results.
  • Discussion and conclusions.

 

2. The size of the MAIN TEXT is 11 pt.

3. There should be only one initial in the text before the mentioned surnames. Between the initial and the last name put a continuous interval (Ctrl+Shift+Space) (напр.: Л.Гнатюк, Moser).

4. Examples are given: sentences, words – italics without quotation marks; phonemes, morphemes, symbols – in bold.

5. Submit all citations in the language of the article (regardless of the language of the original),

necessarily accompanying them with links to the source and a specific page (example: І. Кучеренко писав: “Кожна наука прагне досягнути тієї якісної характеристики наукових знань, яку прийнято називати істинністю” [Кучеренко, 2003, с. 11]).

6. Adhere to the following format of graphic signs:

  • quotation marks “…”for citations;
  • single marks ‘…’ – to indicate word meanings (example: впадина ‘яма в річці’; просвистина ‘прогалина в лісі’);
  • dashes … … (you should use a short dash (–), not a long one (—));
  • hyphen …-... (you need to clearly differentiate dash (–) and hyphen (-). Example: “Символізм – це…”; с.5–10, 2008–2009 рр., Х–ХІ ст. (on the designation of the range – from ... to ...), but: науково-технічний, не сьогодні-завтра;
  • three dots in broken brackets ˂…> – для оформлення авторських пропусків.

7. It is necessary to distinguish between References (a list of used scientific literature) and Sources (a list of sources of the researched language material).

In-text vocations to References are given in square brackets with the indication:

  • the surname of the author or the first word of the title of the work (for publications without authors); the year of publication; the page(s) after the abbreviation “c.“ (in Ukrainian) or “p.” / “ pр.” (in English). Example:

[Гнатюк, 2021], [Гнатюк, 2023, с. 169–185], [Сучасна українська мова…, 2013, с. 95], [Mozer, 2022, pp. 365–370];

  • surnames of all the co-authors (if there are no more than three authors):

[Гнатюк, Дядечко, 2020, с. 20], [Cornell, & Harlow, 2003, р. 200], [Dormus, Brown, & Bloom, 2013];

  • surname of only the first co-author, abbreviation “та ін.” (in Ukrainian) or “et al.” (in English) (if there are more than three authors):

 [Гнатюк та ін., 2016], [Grady et al., 2019];

  • surname of the author, lowercase Latin letter after the year of publication (if the article contains references to the works of one author, published in the same year):

[Гнатюк, 2022a, с. 15],  [Mozer, 2022a; 2022b; 2022c];

  • indicating the number or name of the part of the electronic source (volume, part, chapter, etc.) after the year of publication, if the pages are not numbered:

[Brown, 2017, vol. 2].

In-text vocations to Sources should be in parentheses, e.g.: (Т. Шевченко); (Ш–1, 345); (УС, 157).

8All figures (schemes, graphs, charts, etc.) and tables must be numbered with Arabic numerals and placed directly in the text, where they should be according to the content.

ARTICLE’S POST-TEXT MATERIALS

1. After the main text of the article should be submitted (10 pt, between sections of the materials – a space of one line):

  • Information about the contribution of the authors;
  • Conventional abbreviations (if available);
  • Sources (if available);
  • List of used sources;
  • Dates of submission, review, acceptance for publication;
  • English translation of information about the author(s), title of the article, abstract, keywords;
  • Declaration of no conflict of interest.

2Information about the contribution of authors. It is necessary to indicate information about the contribution of the authors to the preparation of the article according to CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy):

  • Conceptualization. Ideas; the formulation or evolution of overarching research goals and

objectives.

  • Formal analysis. Application of statistical, mathematical, computational or other formal methods for analysis or synthesis of empirical research data.
  • Software. Programming, software development; design of computer programs; implementation of computer code and auxiliary algorithms; code component testing.
  • Methodology. Development or design of methodology; creating models.
  • Data validation. Checking the reproducibility of results/experiments and other research results.
  • The writing is an original draft. Writing the initial version (draft) of the article.
  • Writing – revision and editing. Making significant changes and additions to the article.

Example:

Name, surname – conceptualization, methodology; Name, surname – software, formal analysis; Name, surname – data validation, spelling – original draft; Name, surname – writing – viewing and editing.

3. List of used sources. Bibliographic entries in the list of bibliographic references are given according to the bibliographic style of citation – APA style references (7th Edition).

 A DOI (if available) must be provided for each source.

The article in Ukrainian provides TWO lists of used sources:

  1. The list of used sources in the original language (Література).
  2. The list of used sources in English (References).

4. Sources in Література are numbered and are presented alphabetically (first in Cyrillic, then in Latin).

In References, the bibliographic description of the sources that are not in Roman script (Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, etc.) are presented in English translation and indicate the source language in English in square brackets at the end of the bibliographic description: [in Ukrainian], [in Chinese], etc. Example:

Hnatiuk,  L. (2023). Let’s not deny our own: linguistic essays on the history of word usage. Ukrainian linguistics, 1(53), 169–185. https://doi.org/10.17721/um/53(2023).169-185 [in Ukrainian].

5. The article in English provides ONE list of used sources – References, in which the bibliographic description of sources that are not in Roman script (Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, etc.) are given in English translation. Indicate at the end of the bibliographic description in square brackets in English the source language: [in Ukrainian], [in Chinese], etc. and add a bibliographic description in the source language in square brackets. Example:

6. Information on the dates of receipt and editorial-publishing processing of the article is provided in the format – bold, thin 1 pt, right:

7. Through the row: English translation of information about the author(s) (to the left), title of the article (in the center), abstract, and keywords.

8. At the end of the article, there should be the following text in English for Ukrainian-language articles or in Ukrainian for English-language articles:

For one author:

Автор заявляє про відсутність конфлікту інтересів. Спонсори не брали участі в розробленні дослідження; у зборі, аналізі чи інтерпретації даних; у написанні рукопису; у рішенні про публікацію результатів.

The author declares no conflicts of interest. The funders had no role in the design of the study; in the collection, analyses, or interpretation of data; in the writing of the manuscript; in the decision to publish the results.

For two or more authors:

Автори заявляють про відсутність конфлікту інтересів. Спонсори не брали участі в розробленні дослідження; у зборі, аналізі чи інтерпретації даних; у написанні рукопису; у рішенні про публікацію результатів.

The authors declare no conflicts of interest. The funders had no role in the design of the study; in the collection, analyses, or interpretation of data; in the writing of the manuscript; in the decision to publish the results.

Requirements for articles are obligatory.

 

Denial of Publication

The author may have publication denied for the following reasons:

  • violation of the principles of the ethical policy of the publication;
  • non-compliance with the Author guidelines;
  • plagiarism (self-plagiarism);
  • inaccuracy of facts, statistics, proper names, quotations, vocations, and translations;
  • low scientific level of the article (irrelevant literature used, insufficient base of evidence of research results, illogical and inconsistent presentation of the material, unfounded conclusions, non-compliance with the norms of academic writing style).

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission was not previously published or submitted to other journals.
  • The author complies with the requirements and ethical standards of the journal.
  • The author complies with the technical requirements of Author’s Guidelines.

Privacy Statement

The Editorial Board provides complete anonymity in the system of relations «Author – Reviewer(s)». Reviewers can not use the research findings presented in the submitted articles.

The names and e-mail addresses provided by the users of the website of this Edition will be used solely for internal and technical tasks; they will not be distributed and transferred to third parties.
