Abstract

Background. The issue of updating the methodological approach to the forensic linguistics of speech (oral texts) is analyzed in the article. The potential for rethinking the problem is contained in the experimental and applied achievements of modern phonetic science. The author's experience of working with experts in forensic institutions allows us to draw the methodologists’; and lawyers’; attention to strengthening the professional training of experts, in particular, ways of adapting specialised phonetical knowledge to forensic tasks in the specialty “Linguistic Research of Speech” – 7.3.

Methods. The paper uses the evaluation method of phonetic content in expert research, in line with the adaptation of specialised knowledge to particular issues of person identification. A comparison of object, subject matter, and material (data) is made in applied fields joined by a common need for phonetic knowledge. The phonetic grounds for deepening methodological approaches in phonoscopic examination are described.

Results. The comparison highlighted the appropriate object and subject matter for the specialty 7.3. The author supplemented the specialised knowledge definition and presented examples of erroneous processing on linguistic issues by a novice expert, which were obtained from the observations in the analyzed specialty. The author proposed to develop a model of the correct use of requisite phonetic knowledge to determine the credibility weight of forensic findings.

Discussion and conclusions. The publication concludes that phonetic knowledge has an indirect impact on the experts ability to adapt specialized phonetic knowledge to the expert tasks. The need for changing methodological approaches, forming a conceptual framework, and mastering instrumental speech analysis of acoustic parameters is shown.
